The City and County of Honolulu has introduced an innovative transportation package designed to enhance access to the breathtaking Hanauma Bay. This stunning location, widely regarded as one of Oahu’s top destinations, has experienced significant overcrowding and parking challenges due to its popularity.
The newly launched package combines electric bus transportation with entry to the bay, aimed at improving visitor experiences while alleviating congestion. Notably, the 10-minute educational video required for entry will now be shown during the bus ride, allowing guests to save time upon arrival.
Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, stating, "I am thrilled to utilize this new contract and outside-the-box thinking to improve how residents and tourists experience this amazing natural treasure. By taking a large number of tourists out of their rental cars and into these large electric buses, we hope to create more space for local families to consider Hanauma Bay as a welcoming destination. Now we can offer more ways for everyone to experience the splendor of Hanauma Bay while reducing the negative impact on our roadways and neighboring environment."
Roundtrip transportation will be available for guests, with pick-up locations across the Ala Moana and Waikiki areas. Reservations for the package can be made starting now for dates commencing December 2025 through the Hanauma Bay website or via transportation provider Roberts Hawaii. The pricing for this convenient service is set at $65 per adult and $40 per child, making it an affordable option for families.
Laura Thielen, director of the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation, indicated that this new initiative aligns with Hanauma Bay’s objective of reaching a balance between the recreational and cultural needs of the community. "This first year of operation is very much a trial period, where we are flexible and can adjust to better serve our island community here and abroad," she explained.
Overall, this new transportation initiative is set to enhance the experience for visitors while ensuring that the natural beauty of Hanauma Bay can be enjoyed by all, reinforcing its status as an essential part of Hawaii’s cultural and environmental heritage.
