Delta Airlines has entered a strategic partnership with Netherlands-based Maeve Aerospace, a promising start-up focused on developing a hybrid electric regional jet. Maeve has announced that its innovative aircraft aims to achieve an impressive 40% reduction in both fuel consumption and emissions.
Details of the MJ 500 Regional Jet
Maeve’s flagship MJ 500 jet is designed to accommodate between 76 and 100 passengers, depending on its configuration with either one or two cabins. This flexibility and passenger capacity make the MJ 500 a versatile option for regional airlines.
Delta’s Role in Development
Through this partnership, Delta will contribute its operational expertise to enhance the development of the MJ 500. The aircraft will utilize a hybrid-electric engine that delivers electric power assistance during low-altitude operations, significantly contributing to its sustainability goals.
Future Timeline and Collaboration
Maeve plans to have its first jets operational by 2032. Established in 2021, the company garnered attention in the aviation world following a significant partnership with MHI RJ Aviation Group. MHI RJ, formed after Mitsubishi Heavy Industries acquired Bombardier’s regional jet program in 2020, decided to collaborate with Maeve in 2023 after setting aside its own regional jet ambitions. Additionally, aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney is also playing a key role in the project.
Delta’s Broader Sustainability Efforts
The partnership with Maeve marks Delta’s fifth collaboration under its Sustainable Skies Lab initiative. Previous partners include electric air taxi innovator Joby Aviation, blended-wing aircraft developer JetZero, Boeing, and European aerospace giant Airbus.
Recent Developments and Additional Partnerships
In a notable week for Maeve, the company also announced that regional airline SkyWest Airlines has made an equity investment in the start-up, agreeing to assist in its development. SkyWest operates regional flights for major carriers such as Delta, American, United, and Alaska Airlines, enhancing the collaborative potential of the MJ 500 project. Japan Airlines has also joined the group of partners supporting Maeve.
This collaboration is set to drive forward the next generation of regional air travel, reflecting a significant step in the aviation industry’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
