Dorothy, Toto, and their companions have made a magical entry into the Sphere in Las Vegas, encompassing a whirlwind of cutting-edge technology.
“The Wizard of Oz at Sphere” harnesses modern artistic methods, artificial intelligence, and original photography to transform the beloved 1939 classic into a breathtaking experience on the largest screen available. This remarkable adaptation aims to immerse audiences in the timeless tale like never before.
“What you’re about to witness tonight is our quintessential example of experiential storytelling in this medium,” stated James Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment, during the premiere on August 28. “The Wizard of Oz” not only resonates across generations but also offers a unique chance for viewers to feel as if they are part of the narrative.
What to Expect from “The Wizard of Oz at Sphere”
Upon entering, audience members are met with a familiar theater ambiance, showcasing what appears to be a traditional-sized screen. However, the opening credits quickly expand into Sphere’s massive 160,000-square-foot LED display, enveloping attendees with a powerful visual experience. The journey commences with a pristine rendition of Judy Garland’s iconic “Over the Rainbow,” leading seamlessly into the turbulent sounds of a tornado.
The show employs an impressive array of technology, with low-tech fans producing real tornado winds while haptic seats vibrate in sync with the on-screen action, enhancing the immersive experience.

“At Sphere’s inception, our goal was clear: leverage state-of-the-art technology to engage all the senses—sight, sound, smell, and touch,” Dolan remarked. “We still haven’t quite mastered taste.” Throughout its 77-minute runtime, the film incorporates fog, snow, and crests of fire, enriching the visual spectacle. Additional effects include cascading paper leaves and sponge-like apples, as well as aerial stunts from drone-operated flying monkeys. Viewers will experience a stunning transition much like the original film did from black-and-white to vibrant color more than eight decades ago.
While some film purists might critique the use of artificial intelligence and various artistic liberties, the adaptation skillfully transitions the movie from a traditional 4:3 aspect ratio to a grand 16K display stretching roughly the length of three football fields. Characters and scenic elements previously outside the original’s frame have been artfully added using existing source material, though some scenes have been omitted to streamline the film’s runtime, a decision that aligns with Sphere’s operational strategy.
Backed by a staggering investment of approximately $80 million, “The Wizard of Oz at Sphere” is a collaborative effort by Sphere Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery, Google, and Magnopus.
