This summer, WestJet is significantly expanding its domestic flight offerings, reinstating services to Kamloops and adding new routes to Prince George. The airline is also increasing capacity for flights to Vancouver Island and the Northwest Territories from Edmonton International Airport (YEG). This expansion highlights WestJet’s commitment to catering to the growing demand among Canadians for local travel options.
New Routes and Services from Edmonton
WestJet Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer, John Weatherill, stated that the enhanced services from Edmonton to British Columbia and northern regions reflect the increased interest of Canadians in exploring their local destinations. “With more flights and more seats in key Western Canadian markets, we’re giving Canadians better access to the destinations they rely on for business, leisure, and visiting loved ones,” he noted.
Flights to Kamloops (YKA) and Prince George (YXS), operated by WestJet Encore, will launch in the first week of July. These routes are set to link communities on both sides of the Rockies, providing convenient travel options.
Connection Benefits
James Jackson, Vice President of Air Service & Business Development for Edmonton International Airport, remarked, “YEG welcomes more flights to more places.” The new connections to Kamloops and Prince George allow travelers from British Columbia easy access to world-class attractions in the Edmonton region while also enabling those in Edmonton and nearby areas to reach British Columbia’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture without lengthy road trips.
History of WestJet Services to Kamloops
WestJet has a history of operating flights between Edmonton and Kamloops, with past services running prior to 2016 and briefly in 2021. Unfortunately, these routes were disrupted mainly due to crew shortages and the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jim Moroz, Managing Director at Kamloops Airport, expressed excitement over welcoming back WestJet services. “Edmonton has long been a popular destination for our community,” he said. “We look forward to working with WestJet and our tourism partners to make this service a success.”
Enhanced Domestic Network
In addition to launching new routes, WestJet is also upgrading its connections to Nanaimo and Yellowknife with the introduction of Boeing 737 aircraft. This transition from Q400s more than doubles the seating capacity and strengthens YEG’s role as a pivotal regional launch point for the airline.
Randy Straker, Regional Airport Manager at Yellowknife Airport, emphasized the importance of this upgrade, noting that it reflects the growing demand in their region and strengthens vital links for business and tourism.
Anticipating a Busy Summer
Dave Devana, President and CEO of the Nanaimo Airport Commission, indicated that the airport is preparing for a “popular tourism season,” expecting significant traffic from Edmonton to Vancouver Island. This uptick in demand showcases the continuing recovery of the tourism sector and the valuable role regional air travel plays in connecting communities.
As a result of these developments, travelers can look forward to enhanced connectivity and an array of new opportunities to explore both local and regional destinations, enriching their summer travel experiences.
