In a significant development for the aviation industry, WestJet Airlines and CAE have formalized a groundbreaking 15-year training partnership to establish the Alberta Training Centre of Excellence in Calgary. Set to open in 2028, this state-of-the-art facility will encompass 126,000 square feet of advanced training space, featuring eight full-flight simulators and additional training technologies designed to meet the evolving needs of aviation professionals.
State-of-the-Art Facility Design
The Centre will serve as a premier training ground, with WestJet taking the lead as its primary commercial airline customer. Training programs will initially cover aircraft types such as the Boeing 737MAX, 737NG, 787 Dreamliner, and De Havilland Dash 8-400 (Q400). According to WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech, this initiative underscores the airline’s commitment to investment in both employee development and the Calgary aviation hub.
Collaboration with Mount Royal University
The partnership with Mount Royal University (MRU) marks a first for Canada, combining cutting-edge training facilities with academic research and development. This collaborative approach aims to spur innovation and enhance workforce skills in a rapidly changing aviation landscape.
Strengthening the Aviation Workforce
Matthew Bromberg, CAE’s President and CEO, emphasized the importance of this initiative for the future of Canadian aviation, stating, “Today marks a proud moment for CAE and for Canadian aviation.” He noted that the Centre positions Canada among global leaders in aviation training, especially with the rising demand for qualified aviation professionals.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The Alberta Training Centre is poised to generate considerable economic benefits. New job opportunities are expected to emerge in sectors such as construction, education, and training. Both WestJet and CAE aim to bolster safety and operational excellence that will facilitate enhanced economic opportunities and connectivity in travel, trade, and commerce.
Pipeline for Future Aviators
WestJet’s strategic outlook heavily relies on establishing a robust talent pipeline. The Airline Transition Program (ATP) at MRU will enable aspiring aviation professionals to gain valuable experience through specialized training modules, coupled with practical simulator access at the Centre. This immersive educational experience will prepare the next generation of commercial aviators effectively.
Continued Commitment and Collaboration
CAE will lead the facility’s design and operational framework, while MRU will contribute academic support and mentorship. This agreement builds on a prior Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the Government of Alberta in 2022, aimed at economic recovery through investments in the aerospace and aviation sectors.
As plans unfold for the Alberta Training Centre of Excellence, both WestJet and CAE demonstrate their commitment to shaping the future of aviation training in Canada. With construction set to commence later this year, the collaboration sets a new standard for excellence and innovation in the industry.
