Virginia Beach is making headlines this fall with the introduction of Atlantic Park, a remarkable $350 million entertainment district inspired by local icon Pharrell Williams. Central to this development is the first Wavegarden Cove in the United States, a surf lagoon developed to generate up to 1,000 waves per hour. This cutting-edge facility ensures a consistent surfing experience for all skill levels, making Virginia Beach a captivating destination year-round.
Atlantic Park is the result of a public-private partnership involving Williams, the City of Virginia Beach, and other stakeholders. In addition to the surf lagoon, the complex features The Dome, a reimagined music venue, along with a variety of new dining and retail options. One of the first establishments to open its doors is Nami Nori, a popular sushi restaurant co-owned by Williams. “Nami Nori,” meaning “surfing” or “wave riding,” serves innovative temaki rolls and coastal-inspired dishes in a modern setting, complementing the city’s burgeoning surf culture. These developments signify a transformative shift at the oceanfront, enhancing Virginia Beach’s ambition to attract visitors throughout the year.
Flavourful Fall: Embracing Oyster Season
Fall also marks the much-anticipated return of Lynnhaven oyster season. The cooler waters enhance the unique briny-sweet flavor that these oysters are renowned for regionally. Local chefs showcase this delightful seafood in various dishes—ranging from Terrapin’s Pungo Strawberry Mignonette to dockside platters at Chick’s Oyster Bar. For those seeking a more immersive experience, Pleasure House Oyster Farm offers tours where visitors can harvest oysters directly from the Lynnhaven River while learning about the importance of sustainable farming practices.
Winter on the Water: Whale-Watching Adventures
As winter approaches, the spotlight shifts to whale-watching cruises from December through March, providing breathtaking views of migrating humpback and fin whales along the Atlantic coast. Complementing this experience is the Loonie Savers Pass, which offers exclusive discounts on accommodations, dining, and attractions across the city. This is especially appealing for Canadian travelers looking for diverse winter getaways.
According to Nancy Helman, director of the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, the city is redefining its seasonal appeal. “Virginia Beach has always been recognized for its summer shoreline, but recent developments are expanding its allure. Atlantic Park introduces year-round surfing, while a packed calendar of events—from oysters to holiday celebrations—offers something for everyone.”
Holiday Magic by the Sea
To elevate the seasonal spirit, the BayPort Credit Union Holiday Lights at the Beach returns for its 31st year, turning the Virginia Beach Boardwalk into a beautifully illuminated drive-through experience. Visitors can enjoy spectacles like Surfing Santa, color-changing archways, a dazzling 40-foot Christmas tree, and the world’s longest curved LED light tunnel. The family-friendly event runs nightly from 5:30 PM, beginning on November 14 and continuing through December 31.
With its world-class surfing, culinary delights, and vibrant cultural scene, Virginia Beach proves that its story extends far beyond the traditional summer months. Explore all that the city has to offer at Visit Virginia Beach.
