Immerse Yourself in Tradition at Beit Khayrat Souf
Beit Khayrat Souf is not just a restaurant; it’s a vibrant social enterprise founded in 2016 to uplift local women through employment opportunities. As guests enter the establishment, they are warmly welcomed by the women employees, who celebrate their arrival with the joyful sound of zaghroutas, a traditional Middle Eastern expression of jubilation. Adding to the lively atmosphere, a trio of men performs with drums and the gerbeh, a traditional Jordanian bagpipe.
A Unique Culinary Experience
During this engaging experience with G Adventures, visitors are treated to a delightful traditional meal consisting of maqluba (a unique rice and meat dish), hummus, diwali (stuffed grape leaves), and khubz (pita bread). The origin story of this remarkable restaurant is just as significant as its dishes.
Empowering Women Through Culinary Arts
Founded by two dynamic women, Siham and Sumaya, Beit Khayrat Souf began with limited resources, relying on kitchen utensils from their homes to prepare and serve homemade creations. Today, this establishment employs 25 women and 15 men, playing a crucial role in combating high local unemployment rates. The restaurant provides various classes where visitors can learn to make soap, jam, or even participate in olive-picking activities.
Building a Supportive Community
In an intimate letter placed on the dining tables, Siham and Sumaya share their mission: “Our goal is to empower women and youth, providing income that helps with education and eases unemployment.” This commitment strongly resonates throughout the dining experience, as visitors connect not just with the food but with the heartfelt mission behind it.
Exploring the Rich History of Beit Khayrat Souf
The restaurant itself is nestled within a historic house built in 1881, with its stones carried in by camel. Initial residents included a Christian family that established the community’s first church. After being abandoned for years, this premise found new life under the stewardship of Siham and Sumaya, who turned it into a thriving social enterprise.
