Turkish Airlines has made significant strides in expanding its fleet, recently placing an order for 50 new Boeing widebody aircraft. This substantial order includes 35 of the popular 787-9 Dreamliner models and 15 larger 787-10 variants. In addition, Turkish Airlines has secured options for an additional 25 Dreamliners, demonstrating its commitment to enhancing its operational capabilities.
Expansion Plans with New Aircraft Orders
Alongside the Boeing purchase, Turkish Airlines has announced plans to order up to 150 Boeing 737 Max narrowbody planes. This strategy is part of the airline’s broader goal to increase its fleet, including its budget brand, AJet, to over 800 aircraft within the next decade. Currently, Turkish Airlines operates a combined fleet of more than 480 aircraft, as reported by Planespotters.
Major Orders from Airbus and Boeing
The airline’s ambitious expansion plans are further supported by its recent order of 230 Airbus aircraft in late 2023, which includes 80 widebody and 150 narrowbody planes, along with purchase rights for another 125 aircraft. This diversified approach to fleet expansion positions Turkish Airlines firmly within the competitive landscape of international aviation.
Turkish Airlines’ U.S. Expansion Goals
Currently serving 14 destinations across the United States from its hub in Istanbul, Turkish Airlines has set its sights on further growth in the U.S. market. Future routes may include major cities such as Minneapolis, Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Orlando. Ahmet Bolat, the airline’s chairman, has expressed aspirations for Turkish Airlines to eventually operate in 20 U.S. destinations, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to expanding its global reach.
Connecting More Passengers Worldwide
With its extensive destination portfolio, Turkish Airlines is the world leader in terms of the number of countries served. The airline’s expansion into new avenues and continuous growth in its fleet will enhance its ability to connect passengers across various continents, making international travel more accessible.
As Turkish Airlines progresses with these fleet expansions and market endeavors, it is poised to solidify its status as a significant player in the global aviation industry, benefiting travelers worldwide.
