Two guests of Carnival Cruise Line tragically drowned on August 15 at Celebration Key, the cruise line’s newly inaugurated private destination in the Bahamas. According to local authorities and a spokesman for Carnival, the incidents occurred within just three hours of each other.
The first incident was reported shortly before noon when a 79-year-old man was found unresponsive while snorkeling in the ocean. Following this incident, at approximately 2:30 p.m., a 74-year-old woman became unresponsive in one of the freshwater lagoon pools that are a feature of the destination, as confirmed by Grand Bahama police.
Emergency Response Efforts
Lifeguards were immediately involved in both situations, assisting the guests from the water and performing CPR in attempts to revive them. Sadly, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that both victims were U.S. residents, though they had arrived at Celebration Key with different family groups. The man was on the Mardi Gras, while the woman was aboard the Carnival Elation, according to Carnival Cruise Line representatives.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families during this difficult time,” the spokesperson stated. “Our Care Team is providing assistance."
