Pat, the beloved member of the Travelweek team, was more than just a colleague; he was a friend, mentor, and an integral part of the company’s identity. As the oldest of seven siblings, his life was marked by resilience and dedication from a young age.
Career Journey and Contributions
After graduating from McMaster University, Pat began his professional journey at The Globe & Mail, where he honed his skills over three years. His passion for travel then led him on a global adventure for a year, igniting a successful career in the travel industry upon joining Maclean Hunter in 1970. He later became a key figure at Travelweek, contributing significantly to its evolution from its early days known as ‘The Blue Rag’.
Guiding Influence at Travelweek
“Pat was a true friend, mentor, and colleague to all of us at Travelweek,” shared Gerry Kinasz, the chairman of The Travelweek Group. “He was instrumental in guiding Travelweek to new heights, constantly reminding us that our primary clients were Canada’s travel agents. This unwavering focus is the core of Travelweek’s ongoing success.”
Personal Remembrances
Colleagues of Pat recalled not only his remarkable writing skills but also his athletic prowess. Annie Cicvaric, VP of Media & Content Strategy at Travelweek, cherished memories of Pat as a gifted marathoner who even ran the prestigious Boston Marathon. “He inspired my own running journey and was humble with his talents,” she stated, emphasizing the profound impact he made on many lives.
“Pat possessed an intimate understanding of the travel industry, earning respect from everyone within the field,” said Sue Winiecki, Travelweek’s Business Development Manager. His discussions often turned to football, especially around Harry Redknapp, a personal favorite.
A Legacy of Leadership
Marie Mercado from the administrative team remembered Pat as a kind-hearted individual who left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path. She noted, “He will always be remembered fondly.”
Travelweek’s current editor, Kathryn Folliott, reflected on how foundational Pat was to her career. “Everything I learned about the travel industry originated from Pat. He was a mentor, a remarkable writer, and an excellent teacher,” she expressed.
Pat’s sense of humor also made him a key figure in building connections in the office. Cindy Sosroutomo, Travelweek’s deputy editor, shared, “He gave me my start in this industry, always ensuring there was a balance of fun and professionalism.” His kindness, intelligence, and generosity truly set him apart.
Health Challenges Faced with Courage
While Pat was known for his vibrant presence, he faced significant health challenges throughout his life. In 2002, at 57, he experienced sudden cardiac arrest while waiting for dinner at a restaurant in Toronto. Thankfully, a doctor was nearby, and with an ambulance conveniently on hand, his life was saved. Additionally, he underwent a triple bypass at 70, overcoming odds with remarkable resilience despite a family history of heart disease.
After enduring several health setbacks in recent years, Pat succumbed to cardiac arrest in the early hours of August 26. Plans for a memorial service will be announced in Travelweek Daily.
The entire Travelweek team extends heartfelt condolences to Pat’s family, including his sons, Michael and Eric, and his extended family, mourning a life well-lived and a legacy that will endure in the hearts of those who knew him.
