With a dramatic rise in rail travel bookings expected in 2025 and 2026, tour operators are actively expanding their offerings.
Railbookers has reported an impressive 35% increase in bookings for 2025 and an astounding 51% surge for 2026 compared to last year. Additionally, Amtrak Vacations, a subsidiary of Railbookers, is seeing a 15% increase in bookings for 2025 compared to the same period in the previous year.
Rail travel specialists are not alone in this trend; other companies are also experiencing a spike in demand. For instance, Intrepid Travel has recently added six new itineraries to its rail travel collection in July, following a 24% increase in bookings this year.

Another player in the market, G Adventures, introduced its rail collection in April 2023, with a focus on itineraries that include more than 50% travel by train. Sean Benner, G Adventures’ Director of Product, noted significant engagement with these tours, leading to plans for further expansion of their rail offerings.
Explaining the rising interest in rail travel, tour operators and travel advisors have identified several key factors. The increasing availability of new products, effective social media marketing, and a growing nostalgia for slower travel have all contributed to this trend. “Travelers are now seeking thoughtful, immersive journeys that reduce their environmental impact,” said Intrepid spokesperson Hannah Choat. “While sustainability is important, the allure of rail travel today is equally about the pacing, presence, and deeper connections it fosters.”

Angela Walker, Vice President of Operations for The Society of International Railway Travelers, pointed out that clients opting for luxury rail itineraries are particularly drawn to the concept of slow travel. Passengers relish the opportunity to interact with fellow travelers while enjoying exquisite cuisine and stunning scenery. “It’s about the journey as well as the destination,” she asserted.
Benner echoed this sentiment, stating that immersive travel experiences paired with rail journeys offer a unique perspective shaped by the destination. “Traveling alongside daily commuters adds an authentic touch to the experience, emphasizing community engagement,” he explained.

New Trains and Vintage Experiences
Operators agree that social media is a significant driver of this trend. The allure of iconic trains—like Japan’s bullet trains or India’s sleeper trains—often generates buzz and curiosity. “These experiences, frequently highlighted on social media, enhance the longing to visit such destinations,” Benner noted.
Walker added that the introduction of new luxury trains this year, such as the Britannic Explorer in England and Wales and the La Dolce Vita Orient Express in Italy, have contributed to renewed interest in rail travel. “New trains seldom debut; having three at once is quite remarkable,” she remarked.
While the clientele of The Society of International Railway Travelers remains steady, Walker noted a demographic shift with younger clients in the mix. Luxury rail travel is no longer confined to retirees; more Gen X and millennial travelers are showing interest.
The nostalgic element of rail travel remains significant. Many travelers have personal connections to trains, whether it involves a family member’s association with the railroad or a fond childhood memory. Luxurious itineraries often feature themed nights, like dressing in 1920s-inspired outfits, reminiscent of rail travel’s glory days.
Jackie DeAntonis, a private travel manager at Scott Dunn, affirmed this notion. “Our guests are captivated by the idea of dressing for a glamorous dinner onboard and connecting with fellow travelers. However, the most critical aspect remains the unique experiences rail travel offers in exploring lesser-known regions and creating memorable moments.”
