Algonquin College has announced an exciting enhancement to its aviation partnership with Porter Airlines. This collaboration is set to expand the Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) program, offering increased financial support through scholarships and awards totaling $25,000.
Financial Aid Initiatives for AMT Students
The new initiatives aim to assist 10 second-year AMT students annually. This financial backing will not only aid students but also celebrate their academic achievements while fast-tracking their careers. According to Daniel Maslow, AMT program coordinator, “The demand for aircraft maintenance engineers in Canada is on the rise. As the industry expands, thousands of positions must be filled in the coming years. Our partnership with Porter highlights our commitment to addressing this pressing need for skilled talent.”
Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding
This strengthened partnership stems from a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in May 2024. This agreement coincided with the inauguration of Porter’s new aircraft maintenance base at Ottawa International Airport, further establishing the region as a prominent aviation hub. The partnership emphasizes Algonquin College’s critical role in producing a skilled workforce that benefits regional and national employers.
Empowering Future Aviation Professionals
Mark Savenkoff, Vice President of Advancement and Strategy at Algonquin College, expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential: “The MOU laid a solid foundation for our collaborative efforts. It’s fantastic news for our students, who will gain essential skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience to thrive in the aviation sector.”
Hands-on Learning Opportunities
In addition to financial aid, the partnership enhances practical learning opportunities. In April 2025, Porter invited the AMT cohort to its Ottawa aircraft hangar for a firsthand experience. “This visit was eye-opening for students,” stated Maslow. “They were inspired to meet our graduates who are now part of the team. This is exactly why we do what we do.”
Porter’s Commitment to Inclusion
Porter Airlines is committed to supporting students from diverse backgrounds, including women, newcomers, single parents, Indigenous peoples, and other underrepresented communities. A new initiative provides airfare vouchers to Indigenous learners experiencing emergencies, covering the full cost of a round-trip fare from Ottawa to any destination served by Porter. This initiative aims to help Indigenous students maintain connections with their families during challenging times.
Anita Tenasco, Director of Indigenous Initiatives at Algonquin College, emphasized the importance of this support: “Our Indigenous students come from various backgrounds and regions across Canada, including remote areas. This voucher program can alleviate some of the pressures they face while balancing their academic and family responsibilities.”
Future Growth of the Partnership
The collaboration between Algonquin College and Porter Airlines is poised for further growth in the coming years, likely raising the profile of the AMT program. This partnership reinforces Algonquin College’s standing as a leader in polytechnic education, ensuring that students are well-prepared for successful careers in the aviation industry.
