MSC Cruises Expands Fleet with Innovative LNG-Powered Ships
MSC Cruises is marking a significant advancement in sustainable travel by expanding its World Class fleet with the addition of two new ships, named World Class 5 and World Class 6. These vessels will be constructed by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France and are slated for delivery in 2029 and 2030. This new development will elevate the total number of MSC’s World Class ships to six.
Investment in the Future of Sustainable Cruising
The investment of €3.5 billion in these new ships emphasizes MSC’s dedication to sustainable cruising and its ongoing partnership with the French shipbuilder. Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago celebrated this milestone, stating, “The confirmation of the orders for the two new World Class ships marks a new milestone in our remarkable journey of shipbuilding in France and the continuation of our long-term industrial plan.”
Vago added, “This milestone underscores our commitment to building some of the highest-performing ships in the world, creating a legacy of excellence and innovation in collaboration with Chantiers de l’Atlantique—our long-term partners of more than 20 years. The highly successful World Class platform combines the very best in environmental technology with the latest advancements in guest experiences.”
Technological Advancements for Eco-friendly Travel
The new World Class 5 and 6 will incorporate cutting-edge environmental technologies, featuring dual-fuel engines that can operate on natural liquefied gas (LNG), shore power connectivity, and state-of-the-art wastewater treatment systems. These innovations aim to surpass the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) standards, setting a new benchmark for energy-efficient cruising.
Expanding the World Class Fleet
The upcoming vessels will complement existing ships in the fleet, including MSC World Europa and MSC World America, both currently in service. Additionally, MSC World Asia and MSC World Atlantic are anticipated to launch in 2026 and 2027, respectively. This fleet expansion reflects MSC Cruises’ strategic emphasis on sustainability, technological innovation, and enhancing the passenger experience in a competitive cruise industry.
Financing and Future Outlook
In line with industry practices, the new orders will be contingent upon securing financing, ensuring that MSC Cruises can maintain its trajectory of growth and commitment to environmental leadership.
