Smithsonian Journeys is set to make a grand return to the Mississippi River with its first cruise since the onset of the pandemic, marking a significant expansion of its river cruise offerings. After previously providing cruises on this iconic waterway from 2007 until 2019, the travel operator had to cancel its scheduled sailings between 2020 and 2022 due to unforeseen circumstances.
In 2026, Smithsonian Journeys will revive this exhilarating experience with a nine-day itinerary that embarks from Memphis and concludes in New Orleans. Participants will travel aboard one of American Cruise Lines’ historic paddle wheelers, the American Splendor. Additionally, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin is slated to be the keynote speaker for this voyage, enhancing the experience with her expert insights.
Despite offering only one departure date in March for this journey, interest in exploring the Mississippi by ship remains robust. According to a spokesperson, bookings for the cruise are progressing well, signaling a strong desire among travelers to experience this river’s rich history and landscapes.
This initiative is part of a broader expansion of Smithsonian Journeys’ river cruise portfolio, reflecting strong ongoing demand. Recently, they partnered with AmaWaterways to provide expert-led river cruises throughout Europe in April, featuring a total of 33 departures. Each cruise will be accompanied by two experts who will present educational lectures on board.
Angela Ferragamo, marketing vice president for Smithsonian Travel, noted the overwhelmingly positive response from the market, emphasizing a growing trend for meaningful and enriching travel experiences.
In addition to its Mississippi River cruises, Smithsonian Journeys has also expanded into other regions. The brand partnered with Ponant in 2022, marking its first collaboration with an expedition cruise line. Additionally, it offers river cruises in Canada and Peru, and it has exciting plans for a Nile River cruise in 2027 that coincides with the total solar eclipse.
For those interested in exploring world cultures and history while enjoying luxurious river cruising, Smithsonian Journeys is clearly reinventing its offerings to cater to travelers’ interests. This renewed focus on river cruises not only enhances the portfolio but also aligns with a growing trend among tourists seeking immersive experiences.
