Montana’s Big Sky resort has long stood out as a premier ski destination. However, it faced criticism for a lack of high-end accommodations.
That landscape is shifting dramatically with the introduction of several luxury properties.
In late 2021, the Montage Big Sky hotel made its debut as the mountain’s first five-star property, alongside a significant renovation of the four-star Summit at Big Sky. Additionally, this winter, One&Only will unveil its first U.S. resort at Big Sky’s Moonlight Basin, further enhancing the upscale offerings in the area.
During a recent visit in March, both the Montage and the Summit at Big Sky demonstrated why luxury skiing experiences are thriving in this location.
Montage Big Sky: Elevating Luxury to New Heights
The Montage Big Sky, which cost $400 million to develop, introduces a new level of luxury to the ski resort. This ski-in/ski-out hotel features 150 rooms, its own chairlift, a snow-tubing run, indoor and outdoor pools, and multiple dining options along with an 11,000-square-foot Spa Montage.
The vibrant atmosphere at the Montage provides numerous winter activities that are perfect for guests after a day on the slopes.
The main bar, Alpenglow, boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and gas fireplaces, creating a cozy ambiance that invites both hotel guests and nearby visitors. One winter homeowner remarked that such a vibrant space has been absent in the area.
Dining Options at Montage Big Sky
At Montage Big Sky, the restaurants are as bustling as the nightlife. The spacious Italian restaurant Cortina is filled with guests enjoying its open kitchen, which showcases a variety of homemade pastas and an open-hearth wood-fire oven. The menu merges rustic Italian fare with Western specialties, such as venison and dry-aged steak.

Families and groups find a welcoming atmosphere at Beartooth Pub & Rec, featuring a game room and two-lane bowling alley. Reservations are essential due to high demand, making it a popular spot for soft pretzels, pizza, and a selection of eight local Montana beers on tap.
Ski Rentals and Spa Services
The Montage includes an onsite Compass Sports location for ski and snowboard rentals, making access to the Big Sky lift convenient. For a relaxing day off from skiing, guests can unwind with massages and enjoy the steam room, indoor pool, and hot tub at Spa Montage.

A Stay at the Summit at Big Sky
The Summit hotel, located in the Mountain Village, serves as the base area and features four hotels along with various dining, nightlife, and shopping options.
Room selections at the Summit range from doubles to expansive five-bedroom penthouses and various suites equipped with full kitchens. One highlight includes a one-bedroom suite featuring a gas fireplace and serene views of the slopes from both the living room and bedroom.
With spacious accommodations and two bathrooms, this suite caters perfectly to those anticipating extended stays, allowing guests to enjoy breakfast in their suite before heading to the slopes.
The Summit underwent notable renovations in 2021, revamping all 213 rooms and public spaces to embody an “alpine luxe” aesthetic.
Dining Experiences and Lounges
The remodeled Carabiner Lounge boasts a laid-back atmosphere paired with a gastropub menu, making it one of the most sought-after locations for live music and après-ski gatherings. Reservations for dinner are recommended.

Alongside Carabiner, the seasonal Peaks Chophouse & Wine Lounge stands out with scenic views of Big Sky’s slopes. After its overhaul and reopening in 2022, Peaks has gained a following for its award-winning wine list and exceptional service. Diners rave about the bison steak and local ingredient sourcing through partnerships with farms practicing regenerative agriculture.
The Summit’s Sanctuary: The Refuge
The Refuge, a recent addition to the Summit, is designed to elevate the alpine experience for guests. During midday visits, it serves as a peaceful retreat offering a sequence of rejuvenating rituals, including a Himalayan salt sauna, cold showers, and warm tiled benches.
In the late afternoon, Refuge transforms into a lively après-ski environment as children enjoy the cold showers while anticipating the warmth of the heated areas. The expansive outdoor hot tub becomes a gathering place for all ages, providing a perfect spot for a soak or refreshments while watching the sun set over the captivating landscape.
