Lufthansa Group is significantly expanding its Canadian operations, enhancing options for travelers eager to connect with Europe. Christina Meakin, the Director of Sales for Canada at Lufthansa Group, recently provided insights into this growth.
Growth of the Lufthansa Group Canadian Network
During the summer 2025 schedule, Lufthansa Group introduced two new direct routes from Canada, emphasizing its commitment to transatlantic connectivity. The inaugural flight from Halifax to Zurich by Edelweiss just launched, and earlier this year, the Discover Airlines flight from Calgary to Frankfurt commenced. Together, these additions enhance the extensive transatlantic network already established.
This summer, Lufthansa Group is operating 87 weekly flights from five Canadian cities, underscoring its strong presence across the country. Montreal stands out as a key hub, featuring 26 weekly flights to major European destinations such as Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, and Vienna.
Toronto, Canada’s bustling commercial center, also plays a critical role in the network. Lufthansa operates daily service from Frankfurt and Munich, while Swiss Airlines adds five weekly flights from Zurich, resulting in a total of 19 weekly connections between Toronto and European hubs.
Vancouver passengers are offered daily direct flights to Frankfurt, Munich, and Zurich (via Edelweiss). Additionally, Calgary now enjoys robust connectivity, with a seven times weekly service to Frankfurt and three new weekly flights to Munich, totaling 13 weekly connections through Lufthansa Group. Halifax is becoming an increasingly popular gateway, currently served five times a week from Frankfurt, complemented by twice-weekly flights to Zurich.
Lufthansa Group’s enriching Canadian route network illustrates its dedication to making Europe more accessible than ever for Canadian travelers. Next year marks a noteworthy occasion: the 70th anniversary of Lufthansa flights to Montreal, a testament to the long-standing commitment to the transatlantic partnership.
Strategic Alliances and Connectivity
The synergy brought forth by the Atlantic Joint Venture is another highlight, uniting seven leading airlines: Air Canada, United Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings. Through this collaboration, Lufthansa’s operations in Canada are effectively bolstered by Air Canada’s nationwide connectivity, facilitating travel into the U.S.
This strategic alliance not only enhances flexibility but also opens up a broader array of routes connecting North America and Europe. Since its inception in 2010, the partnership has significantly improved transatlantic connectivity, offering travelers enhanced options and amenities.
Major Investments within the Lufthansa Group
In addition to ongoing route expansion, Lufthansa Group is making substantial investments to modernize its fleet. Both SWISS and Edelweiss Air have incorporated new A350 aircraft, designed to elevate passenger experience while promoting sustainability—resulting in emissions reductions between 15-35% depending on the model and operational specifics.
To further enrich customer experience, Lufthansa and SWISS have updated their cabin offerings with new premium products.
An exciting development is the recent groundbreaking of Lufthansa Technik’s new Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Calgary. Celebrated on June 25, this state-of-the-art facility marks a significant investment into aviation infrastructure in Canada. The facility will include a LEAP engine maintenance agreement with WestJet and is anticipated to open in 2027, showcasing Lufthansa Group’s commitment to supporting the aviation industry in the region.
Lufthansa’s robust network expansions, strategic partnerships, and investments in modern technology highlight its commitment to enhancing travel experiences for Canadians, making it an enticing option for travelers looking to explore Europe.
