Jamaica is experiencing a positive shift in its travel advisories from major North American countries. Recently, officials from both the Canadian and US governments announced the easing of travel warnings for this vibrant Caribbean destination, a move being celebrated by local tourism stakeholders.
In a revised advisory posted on May 29, 2025, the US State Department has downgraded Jamaica’s risk level to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. This decision was attributed to a significant reduction in violent crime since 2024, contributing to a safer environment for visitors.
Similarly, on June 3, the Canadian government also elevated Jamaica to Level 2, indicating that Canadians should exercise a high degree of caution while traveling there. This marks a notable improvement from its previous stance of advising against non-essential travel.
Angella Bennett, Regional Director for the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) in Canada, emphasized the significance of this update, highlighting the joint efforts of numerous authorities to enhance public safety. “We take visitor safety seriously and work hard to create a welcoming environment for visitors as they come to enjoy unique travel experiences that cater to a diverse traveller demographic,” she stated, expressing optimism about the future of Jamaica’s tourism industry.
Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, echoed these sentiments, stating that the adjustments reflect the diligent work of the nation’s security forces and government agencies. Holness noted a remarkable 43.3% reduction in reported murders this year, underscoring the effectiveness of targeted policies aimed at crime reduction and safety improvements.
At a news conference on May 29, Holness elaborated, declaring that the uplift in travel advisories is not just a coincidence but a result of extensive investment in security infrastructure and ongoing diplomatic engagement. “It signals to the international community that Jamaica is safer and a more secure destination, not only for visitors but for residents,” he said.
Despite the positive changes, the US government continues to advise caution in specific communities across Jamaica due to ongoing safety concerns. These advisories caution travelers, particularly that some areas, while not frequent tourist destinations, may still experience higher crime rates. The travel warning site states, “While violent crime in Jamaica has decreased since 2024, it remains statistically high throughout the country.”
According to information provided by the US travel advisory, crimes are often concentrated in what the police refer to as “traditional hot spots” or “high-risk communities,” although they can occur anywhere, highlighting the importance of vigilance during travel.
As of now, nearly 100 countries around the globe, including France, Mexico, Sweden, Spain, Thailand, and Italy, fall under the Level 2 or “yellow” category in terms of travel advisories, which now includes Jamaica, reflecting a broader trend of safely navigating international travel.
With these developments, Jamaica aims to reposition itself as a premier travel destination in the Caribbean, inviting travelers to experience its rich culture, beautiful landscapes, and now, a significantly enhanced sense of safety.
