Intrepid Travel Expands Its Portfolio with Boutique Acquisitions in Tasmania and Marrakech
Intrepid Travel, a leader in responsible travel, has recently made a significant move by acquiring boutique properties in Tasmania and Marrakech. This strategy aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
New Acquisition in Tasmania: Edge of the Bay Resort
The family-operated Edge of the Bay resort is a 20-room coastal getaway near Coals Bay, perfectly situated to provide stunning views of Wineglass Bay. Nestled in 18 acres of picturesque landscapes and mere footsteps from Freycinet National Park, the resort features oceanview studios and cozy chalets.
Intrepid Travel plans to refresh the property to align with its “impact-led ethos.” Enhancements will include the introduction of eco-friendly activities and environmental education initiatives in collaboration with Greening Australia, an environmental partner focused on restoring and conserving native Australian vegetation. Moreover, Intrepid aims to work with the Palawa people, the area’s indigenous inhabitants, to perform a cultural heritage assessment of the resort.
Introducing a Traditional Riad in Marrakech
In addition to the Tasmanian acquisition, Intrepid has acquired a charming 17-room riad in Marrakech, just minutes away from the historic Medina. This traditional Moroccan guesthouse has started its operations this month and provides unique culinary experiences created in partnership with The Amal Association, a nonprofit dedicated to training women in the hospitality sector. Intrepid Travel is set to fully manage the property starting in July.
CEO James Thornton emphasized the company’s commitment to preserving culture and enhancing community connections through its accommodation approaches. “Our approach to accommodation is underpinned by a commitment to preserving culture, fostering connection, supporting communities, and boosting travel’s economic contribution to the local community,” he said.
Strategic Plans for Future Growth
Last year, Intrepid Travel announced an ambitious plan to accelerate its expansion into the hotel market, with a goal of acquiring 20 properties by 2027. This expansion will target various regions, including Asia, Africa, and the Americas. This follows their acquisition of the Daintree Ecolodge in Australia and a long-term lease on a hotel in Vietnam.
Since taking over the Daintree Ecolodge, Intrepid has implemented numerous sustainability initiatives, including solar power systems, advanced wastewater treatment, composting efforts, and vegetable gardens. Importantly, the lodge has proudly achieved B Corp certification, a testament to its high standards of social and environmental performance.
