Intrepid Travel Expands Portfolio with Boutique Acquisitions in Tasmania and Marrakech
In a strategic move to enhance its accommodation offerings, Intrepid Travel has announced the acquisition of two boutique properties: the scenic Edge of the Bay in Tasmania and a traditional riad situated in Marrakech. These acquisitions exemplify Intrepid’s ongoing commitment to responsible tourism and community engagement.
The Edge of the Bay: A Coastal Paradise
Located near Coals Bay, Tasmania, the Edge of the Bay is a charming 20-room coastal resort that boasts stunning views of Wineglass Bay. Nestled on 18 acres adjacent to Freycinet National Park, this property offers a range of accommodations, including oceanview studios and private chalets.
Aligning with an “Impact-Led Ethos”
Intrepid intends to refresh the property to harmonize with its impact-led ethos, which emphasizes sustainability and community involvement. Plans for the resort include introducing nature-based activities and environmental education programs, developed in collaboration with Greening Australia. This organization is focused on restoring and conserving Australia’s native vegetation. Additionally, Intrepid will partner with the Palawa people, the Indigenous inhabitants of Tasmania, to conduct a cultural heritage assessment of the property.
A Riad in the Heart of Marrakech
In Marrakech, Intrepid has acquired a 17-room riad located just minutes from the iconic Medina, the city’s historical center. This traditional Moroccan guesthouse recently opened its doors and features culinary experiences curated in partnership with The Amal Association, a nonprofit dedicated to training women in the hospitality sector. Intrepid plans to take full operation of the riad starting in July.
Economic and Cultural Commitment
According to Intrepid CEO James Thornton, “Our approach to accommodation is underpinned by a commitment to preserving culture, fostering connection, supporting communities, and boosting travel’s economic contributions to the local community.” This pledge underscores Intrepid’s goal of making a meaningful impact in the locations it operates.
Future Expansion Plans
Last year, Intrepid announced its ambition to accelerate its expansion into the hotel sector, with a target of acquiring 20 properties by 2027. This growth strategy aims to extend beyond Australia to regions in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Recent acquisitions include the eco-conscious Daintree Ecolodge in Queensland, Australia, and a multi-year lease for a hotel in Vietnam.
At the Daintree Ecolodge, Intrepid has successfully implemented solar energy solutions, advanced wastewater treatment systems, composting practices, and organic vegetable gardens while eliminating single-use plastics. The lodge has achieved B Corp certification, signifying its high standards in social and environmental performance.
