A recent operation by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the Great Lakes region has led to the removal of crew members from multiple cruise ships that operate overnight itineraries. This action has sparked concerns among cruise lines, crew, and passengers.
Victory Cruise Lines confirmed that crew members were removed from two of its vessels, the Victory I and Victory II, during routine operations in the Port of Detroit. Reports indicate that crew members were also taken from the Viking Octantis, with nine crew members reported to be disembarked, while 15 were removed from its sister vessel, the Viking Polaris. Additionally, crew members from the Pearl Seas Cruises ship, known as the Pearl Mist, were also affected, according to a source familiar with the situation.
In response to inquiries, both Viking and Pearl Seas Cruises have not provided comments regarding the situation. The CBP has acknowledged its involvement in an ongoing operation on the Great Lakes but is unable to disclose more specific details due to the operational nature of the activity.
Sources connected with Victory Cruise Lines specified that on July 9 and 11, the CBP removed 13 crew members from the Victory ships who had previously been cleared for entry into the United States and authorized to work on board. This unexpected action has raised questions about the protocols in place for crew member clearance and disembarkation.
The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which lists Pearl Seas as a member, commented on the removals, stating, “Cruise lines cooperate fully with authorities. Crew may be asked to disembark at their request, and we do not speculate on the reason.” This highlights the cruise industry’s commitment to compliance with legal procedures.
John Waggoner, founder and chairman of Victory, expressed that the cruise line is fully cooperating with authorities and is actively seeking to ascertain the reasons for the crew removals.
This incident raises crucial discussions about security measures and the regulatory environment surrounding cruise operations in the Great Lakes area. As operations continue, stakeholders are keen on understanding the implications of this event on future cruise itineraries and crew safety.
