The refreshing chill of Champagne and a gentle breeze felt a world away from the sweltering heat of New York City as I embarked on a unique sailing adventure.
In the heat of August, aboard a 70-foot Herreshoff sailboat, around 15 guests set sail through New York Harbor. The picturesque backdrop included iconic landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty, creating a stunning visual experience.
The friendly and skilled crew served an array of culinary delights, including Maine lobster rolls, chilled oysters, and crisp Gulf shrimp, all while ensuring glasses were filled with fine wines and sparkling Champagne. This two-hour sailing experience, concluding with a breathtaking sunset illuminating the glass towers of lower Manhattan, is among the exclusive offerings at The Mark Hotel, a luxurious property nestled in the Upper East Side of the city.

Although situated miles from the Tribeca dock where guests board the sailboat, the maritime experience embodies the signature elegance of The Mark. Identifiable by its chic black-and-white mast that reflects the hotel’s sophisticated art deco aesthetics, the sailboat experience is tailored by renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten from The Mark Restaurant. Charter options allow for custom menus from the hotel’s other dining venue, Caviar Kaspia.
This sailing adventure is one of many distinct experiences available at The Mark, a hotel that seamlessly blends luxury with an approachable vibe. General Manager Elon Kenchington has described it as an intentional embrace of the “high-low concept,” offering lavish experiences alongside more casual options. For instance, guests can indulge in the $640 per person sailing experience or opt for a $6 hot dog at the Mark Haute Dog Cart located right outside the hotel.
Caviar Kaspia’s baked potato topped with caviar can reach prices up to $570, while The Mark’s summer pop-up, The Mark Clam Bar, offers beachside-inspired dishes like lobster rolls and fish tacos, elevated with caviar. Additionally, guests can enjoy a curated picnic experience in nearby Central Park, featuring a gourmet menu designed by Jean-Georges.

A Local Favorite
The Mark Hotel exudes a friendly neighborhood vibe, located on a serene, tree-lined street amidst the shopping and dining hotspots of Madison Avenue and Central Park. The staff fosters a sense of community, often greeting regulars by name.
“We’re really an anchor of the community,” Kenchington notes, emphasizing the hotel’s role as a popular gathering spot for locals seeking a drink or a relaxed dining experience. The high-profile collaboration with Jean-Georges has undoubtedly added to The Mark’s allure, distinguishing it as part of the Preferred Hotels network, despite not being affiliated with a major hotel brand.
The hotel has cultivated a dedicated clientele, with guests frequently extending their stays to an average of four to five nights, unlike the typical one or two nights at most New York hotels. Room rates vary, averaging around $1,000 per night, with prices soaring to $100,000 for its opulent penthouse suite.

Furthermore, The Mark is set to enhance its offerings with the upcoming Augustinus Bader Spa, slated to open early next year. Until then, wellness treatments are available in-room, with spacious accommodations permitting the setup of massage beds. Each room showcases a cozy design, some with views of the leafy 77th Street, featuring a black-and-white theme that extends to the luxurious marble bathrooms.
One of the standout features of The Mark is the charming illustrations from French artist Jean-Philippe Delhomme, which can be found throughout the hotel, from its website to shampoo bottles, adding a unique touch to the overall guest experience.
