Smithsonian Journeys has announced exciting new travel itineraries for 2026 and 2027, featuring land-based tours, special solar eclipse excursions, and small-ship cruises, including a scenic journey along the Mississippi River.
The renowned tour operator is broadening its collection with new offerings in the Balkans and Greece. Embracing the rising trend of astrotourism, Smithsonian Journeys is set to provide itineraries focused on sky observation coupled with a unique river cruise experience in the U.S.
New European Itineraries for 2026
“Baltics Past and Present: A Journey to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia” is an 18-day adventure debuting in May. Travelers will explore historic landmarks, majestic castles, and UNESCO World Heritage sites across the three Baltic countries.
Another noteworthy offering is the “Greek Odyssey: Athens to Corfu.” This 14-day itinerary guides visitors through Greece’s rich heritage, from the birthplace of democracy in Athens to the stunning island of Corfu, along with significant ancient sites like Delphi.
Exploring Other Destinations
In addition to Europe, Smithsonian Journeys is launching new itineraries in Switzerland and the American West, catering to a diverse range of interests.
Astrotourism Itineraries: A Celestial Experience
Responding to the increased interest in astrotourism, Smithsonian Journeys plans to introduce two spectacular itineraries dedicated to celestial phenomena next year.
One standout trip is “Solar Eclipse Over Spain — Basque Country to León,” an eight-day itinerary commencing on August 8. Travelers will witness a total solar eclipse in northern Spain while also exploring Madrid and UNESCO World Heritage sites. This trip is anticipated to be among the most sought-after journeys.
Moreover, the “Chile Earth and Sky: A Stargazing Journey from Santiago to the Atacama Desert” will offer two departure dates next year, alongside another date slated for 2027. This 12-day itinerary provides an immersive experience in astronomy, featuring visits to premier observatories in northern Chile.
Small-Ship Cruises: New Adventures Await
Smithsonian Journeys is also expanding its offerings with two new small-ship cruises, one scheduled for next year and another in 2027. A notable collaboration with Ponant will result in an expedition cruise to the Baja Peninsula, set to begin next year.
The “Cruising the Mississippi: A Springtime Voyage from Memphis to New Orleans” will take travelers on a nine-day journey aboard the American Splendor paddlewheeler. Highlights include visits to historic Southern cities, battlefields, and plantations.
In 2027, the “Baja and the Sea of Cortez” expedition cruise will transport guests aboard Ponant’s Le Bellot for an 11-day adventure. Passengers can expect to enjoy breathtaking whale-watching, snorkeling with sea lions, and hiking in stunning natural landscapes.

Smithsonian Journeys has also revealed its top 10 journeys for 2026, reflecting a growing appetite for exploration. These popular itineraries will feature destinations such as Japan, Italy, Egypt, Central Asia, Spain, Turkiye, Switzerland, Greece, and France.
