Fort Lauderdale has become a focal point for discussions on the evolving landscape of river cruising. During a panel at CruiseWorld, industry representatives highlighted an array of new and exotic destinations, illustrating that "river cruising isn’t just for Europe anymore," as stated by moderator Brinley Hineman, river cruise editor at Travel Weekly.
AmaWaterways recently took center stage with the launch of its second ship, the AmaMelodia, on Colombia’s Magdalena River. Kristin Karst, the company’s chief brand officer, emphasized the thrill of being a pioneer in unexplored regions. "The beauty of river cruising lies in discovery,” she remarked, mentioning notable rivers such as the Chobe in southern Africa, the Nile in Egypt, and the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia. Colombia stands out as a shimmering example of this new trajectory.
Meanwhile, Riviera Travel is carving its path to unique experiences by introducing a new itinerary on the Mekong River set to launch in 2027. This marks the company’s first venture beyond European waterways. Marilyn Conroy, executive vice president of business development at Riviera, noted that the new offerings have already garnered positive feedback from their travel partners.
The panel also explored river cruising options in China, with a focus on Century Cruises. With China reopening to travel post-COVID, the company aims to reintroduce the destination to travelers. David Fredericks, president of Century’s Americas division, emphasized a marketing approach aimed not just at promoting river cruises, but showcasing the rich beauty of China as a whole.
Arjun Sinsinwar, chief inspiration officer at Antara River Cruises, expressed enthusiasm for the opportunities available in India. He characterized Indian river cruising as an ideal choice for well-traveled individuals eager for new experiences. "India may not be the first choice for river cruises, but it offers so many cultural, natural, and spiritual touchpoints," he explained.
Exploring New Horizons in Europe
While newer destinations are gaining attention, panelists acknowledged that Europe still holds untapped treasures. Viva Cruises is preparing to set sail on Italy’s Po River in 2027, with Venice serving as a vibrant base. "This is uniquely different," said John Dennis, vice president of sales for the U.S., Canada, and South America at Viva.
Moreover, innovation is not limited to new destinations; river cruise lines are also experimenting with expanded seasons. Avalon Waterways is introducing a Cozy Collection, which will feature voyages in October and November, preceding the Christmas market cruises. Richard Hickey, senior director of key accounts, indicated strong demand, confirming that all ships on the Rhine, Main, and Danube will be operational during the Cozy season.
With significant steps being taken across continents, river cruising is increasingly becoming an accessible adventure for travelers seeking unique experiences beyond traditional routes. The industry’s evolution signals a bright future for those eager to explore both familiar and uncharted waters.
