Don’t dismiss in-flight magazines just yet; they still have a place in the skies. Despite a notable decline in print publications, Porter Airlines’ re:porter recently celebrated its milestone 100th issue with the November/December edition, showcasing the airline’s commitment to offering unique onboard experiences.
To commemorate this significant achievement, Porter Airlines made an engaging announcement across its Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook pages, reminding travelers of the enduring charm of reading while flying. The post generated over 500 likes and numerous comments, reflecting travelers’ fondness for physical reading materials at altitudes above 30,000 feet.
Kevin Jackson, President of Porter Airlines, emphasizes that re:porter is integral to the airline’s "elevated economy experience." Jackson describes the magazine as a premium onboard amenity that complements their other offerings, such as complimentary drinks and elegant glassware.
In contrast, most airlines have phased out print publications entirely. United Airlines discontinued its seatback edition of Hemispheres in 2024 after 32 years of service, while Air Canada’s enRoute magazine folded its final issue just a month later. The unfortunate shift toward digital alternatives has left many aviation enthusiasts lamenting the loss of in-flight reading experiences. For instance, Columbia Journalism Review published a piece effectively mourning the era of in-flight magazines.
Digital has become the mainstay for travelers, as shown by Air Canada’s provision of complimentary access to more than 7,000 newspapers and magazines through the PressReader app. Yet, despite the trend toward online content, re:porter stands out as a retro icon in today’s aviation landscape.
While Porter Airlines offers complimentary, high-speed WiFi on its E195-E2 fleet, Jackson notes that many passengers still appreciate the tactile experience of reading a physical magazine. "In an era of digital saturation, the magazine provides a valuable alternative form of entertainment," he adds.
re:porter was launched in October 2006 and is jointly produced with Strategic Content Labs, a division of St. Joseph Communications. Originally, the magazine catered to destinations in Eastern Canada and the US Northeast but has since expanded its coverage to include various locations across North America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Costa Rica.
The 100th issue showcases many of these newly added destinations, with Jackson noting that passengers often refer to the destination guides for local recommendations. The editorial focus remains on uncovering "hidden gems," providing insights that go beyond typical tourist attractions and catering to the adventurous spirit of travelers.
Additionally, elements like the magazine’s popular "Find the Difference" puzzle captivate audiences, garnering high participation rates among readers. The magazine also features a compelling "Day in the Life" column, which offers insight into the daily lives of Porter staff members, recognizing their contributions and unique personalities.
Reaching the 100-issue milestone is an impressive feat that highlights both Porter Airlines’ longevity and its growth over the past 19 years. The continued publication of re:porter serves not just as an onboard amenity but as a cultural touchstone that resonates with travelers eager for a more substantial in-flight experience.
