FORT LAUDERDALE — The river cruising industry is expanding into remarkable destinations beyond Europe, as highlighted during a recent panel at CruiseWorld. Key representatives discussed new river cruise itineraries spanning from Colombia to India, showcasing a vibrant future for this travel segment.
Brinley Hineman, the river cruise editor at Travel Weekly, emphasized the shift in river cruising, stating, “River cruising isn’t just for Europe anymore.” This sentiment was echoed by Kristin Karst, Chief Brand Officer of AmaWaterways, who initiated the conversation by boasting of her company’s expansion efforts.
AmaWaterways has recently launched the AmaMelodia on Colombia’s Magdalena River, with Karst expressing excitement about being a pioneer in new destinations. “The beauty of river cruising lies in discovery,” she noted, adding that other highlighted rivers include Africa’s Chobe, the Nile in Egypt, and the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia.
Another company making waves in the industry is Riviera Travel, which is set to expand its offerings with a new itinerary on the Mekong River starting in 2027. Marilyn Conroy, the executive vice president of business development, shared that travel partners have already given positive feedback on this endeavor.
Reviving Interest in China’s Yangtze River
The conversation then turned to China, where the Yangtze River is seeing renewed interest. Ken Shapiro, editorial director at Northstar, asked about the reintroduction strategy from Century Cruises. David Fredericks, president and general manager for the Americas, confirmed that after a lengthy COVID-19-induced hiatus, the company aims to promote the beauty of China as a premier travel destination.
Exploring India’s River Cruising Potential
Arjun Sinsinwar, Chief Inspiration Officer at Antara River Cruises, passionately conveyed the charm and depth of river cruising in India. He noted that while India may not yet be a mainstream choice for river cruising enthusiasts, it represents a compelling frontier for the well-traveled. The cultural, natural, and spiritual experiences available during Indian river cruises are unparalleled, appealing to those seeking unique voyages.
New Horizons in Europe
Despite the focus on global destinations, the panel emphasized that Europe still has unexplored rivers worth considering. For instance, Viva Cruises plans to commence voyages along Italy’s Po River starting in 2027, with Venice as its operational base, offering a unique European experience, as noted by John Dennis, the company’s VP of Sales for the Americas.
Additionally, river cruise lines are innovating with new products and expanded sailing seasons. Avalon Waterways is introducing its Cozy Collection, featuring cruises during October and November, before the popular Christmas market season begins. Richard Hickey, senior director of key accounts, highlighted the increased demand, which has led to all ships in the Rhine, Main, and Danube being activated during this period.
