FORT LAUDERDALE — Representatives from leading river cruise lines showcased an exciting range of new and exotic destinations during a panel discussion at CruiseWorld this Thursday. As Brinley Hineman, river cruise editor at Travel Weekly, noted, “River cruising isn’t just for Europe anymore.”
Kristin Karst, chief brand officer of AmaWaterways, kicked off the discussion by highlighting the company’s commitment to exploring fresh river destinations. With the recent launch of the AmaMelodia on Colombia’s Magdalena River, Karst expressed her enthusiasm about being a trailblazer in untapped regions. "It’s always great to be the first one somewhere," she remarked.
Karst elaborated on the allure of river cruising, emphasizing that it epitomizes discovery. "Colombia and the Rio Magdalena are just the latest examples," she said. Other prominent non-European rivers on AmaWaterways’ itinerary include the Chobe in southern Africa, the Nile in Egypt, and the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia.
Riviera Travel is also expanding its offerings; the company announced a new itinerary on the Mekong River set to launch in 2027, marking its first non-European sailing. Marilyn Conroy, Riviera’s executive vice president of business development, noted the positive reception from travel partners regarding this new venture.
The conversation shifted to China, where Ken Shapiro, editorial director at Northstar, highlighted the work of Yangtze River specialist Century Cruises. Following a lengthy hiatus due to COVID-19, China is welcoming travelers again. David Fredericks, president and general manager of Century Cruises in the Americas, described their strategy as focusing on promoting the enchanting beauty of China to the travel community.
Arjun Sinsinwar, chief inspiration officer at Antara River Cruises, passionately discussed India’s potential as a river cruise destination. He pointed out that while India may not be the first choice for many, it attracts well-traveled individuals seeking a new adventure and cultural experience.
What’s New in Europe?
While the focus has shifted beyond European rivers, there are still plenty of gems to explore within the continent. Viva Cruises is set to commence its Po River cruises in Italy starting in 2027, with Venice as the central hub. John Dennis, vice president of sales for Viva, described this initiative as uniquely different.
The discussion also included innovations within existing routes. For example, Avalon Waterways is launching its Cozy Collection, providing voyages in October and November, just ahead of the popular Christmas market cruises. Richard Hickey, senior director of key accounts, reported that due to high demand, all Avalon ships on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers will be in operation during this new Cozy season.
In summary, river cruising is witnessing a remarkable transformation, with a wider selection of destinations and innovative offerings making it an appealing choice for travelers worldwide. Whether it’s discovering new rivers in Colombia or experiencing cultural richness in India, the future of river cruising looks bright and full of adventure.
