Contour Airlines is set to expand its operations into the Caribbean with the launch of new routes connecting Dominica to St. Thomas and San Juan. Starting September 24, the airline will initiate thrice-weekly flights between Dominica and St. Thomas, followed by a four-times-weekly service between Dominica and San Juan commencing September 25.
New Routes and Aircraft
To service these routes, Contour Airlines will utilize its fleet of 30-seat Embraer regional aircraft. With a diversified fleet that includes both Embraer and Bombardier jets, Contour aims to enhance regional connectivity in this vibrant tourist destination. Notably, Contour will be the exclusive carrier operating flights between St. Thomas and Dominica, while it will face competition on the San Juan-Dominica route from Caribbean Airlines, which recently launched its operations on the same path. This service comes in the wake of Silver Airways, which flew the San Juan to Dominica route until its operations ceased in March.
Strategic Shift into the Caribbean
The entrance into the Caribbean marks a significant strategic shift for Contour Airlines. Previously, the airline focused its scheduled flights primarily in the Southeast, Midwest, and Mountain West regions, with no international service beyond the U.S. Contour currently operates 22 federally subsidized Essential Air Service routes, alongside a private charter operation. This expansion illustrates Contour’s commitment to diversifying its route network and providing new travel options for those looking to explore the Caribbean.
Interline Partnerships and Connectivity
To enhance its service offerings, Contour Airlines has established interline partnerships with major airlines including American, United, and Alaska. In May, it announced a new partnership with Spirit Airlines. Notably, American, United, and Spirit provide flights to both San Juan and St. Thomas. This network allows Contour to facilitate seamless connectivity for travelers heading to and from these destinations, further bolstering its position in the regional travel market.
Ownership and Future Prospects
Contour Airlines is partially owned by SkyWest, holding a 25% stake in the company. This partnership potentially positions Contour for future growth opportunities and enhances its ability to leverage resources and industry expertise. As it embarks on this new journey in the Caribbean, Contour aims to not only provide competitive air service but also to contribute to the tourism economy of Dominica, St. Thomas, and San Juan.
