I checked my Apple map, confirming that I had arrived at the right location. Yet, I had difficulty spotting my hotel. My wife and I had a reservation for two nights at Le Petit Hotel Notre Dame in the heart of Old Montreal. Our Uber driver dropped us off on Rue Notre Dame, just steps away from the iconic Notre-Dame Basilica, but the hotel seemed elusive.
Finally, I noticed a subtle sign in a window on the north side of the street reading “Petit Hotel.” With our carry-on bags in tow, we stepped inside, but instead of a traditional hotel lobby, we entered a bustling coffee shop filled with the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of a gleaming espresso machine.
“Excuse me,” I asked a friendly barista, “Can you point me toward Le Petit Hotel?”
To my surprise, she smiled and replied, “This is it. Don’t worry, it happens all the time.”
As it turns out, the lobby serves dual purposes—as both a coffee shop and the hotel check-in area. This charming blend enhances the intimate atmosphere of the 17-room boutique hotel located just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame Basilica. Le Petit Hotel is part of the renowned Gray Collection, which also includes upscale properties like the William Gray Hotel and Auberge du Vieux-Port.
The Gray Collection was established by the Antonopoulos brothers, Costa and Tony, who immigrated to Canada from Greece. They expanded their holdings over time, culminating in the creation of the Gray Collection brand in 2022. Le Petit Hotel Notre Dame marks their latest venture, showcasing rooms with restored exposed brick walls from a historic building that once housed shops and a factory.
“We meticulously cleaned each brick,” an employee explained during a tour, showcasing the hotel’s commitment to preserving its heritage.
Rooms vary in size from “small” to “large,” ranging from 220 to 375 square feet, with options facing Rue Notre Dame or located towards the quieter back of the building. Our fourth-floor room boasted large windows with street views, though it lacked a closet. Instead, open storage provided ample hangers, a mini-fridge, a large-screen TV, and a Bluetooth speaker perfect for a relaxing soundtrack.
The compact bathroom featured luxurious Le Labo bath products and an impressive shower setup with multiple nozzles guaranteed to offer a robust experience for guests. However, be wary of how you aim them!
While space constraints mean there’s no room for a large desk, the hotel provides a cozy breakfast room and lobby area with outlets where guests can work and enjoy complimentary lattes. Breakfast is included in the stay and features local favorites like Montreal bagels, fresh fruit, yogurt, and deli meats, ensuring guests start their day right. In the evening, the lobby transforms into a casual social space where wine can be ordered.
The design leans towards a European aesthetic, intentionally minimalistic to highlight the building’s natural charm. However, some amenities, like the drinking glasses, may feel a tad small. Yet, the incredible service and stylish decor more than compensate for these minor shortcomings.
“One reason we love working in Old Montreal is the beauty of the old buildings,” shared Dimitri Antopoulous, the president of the Gray Collection. “We strive to blend the historic feel with modern touches.”
Antopoulous emphasized the special atmosphere fostered in smaller hotels. The intimate environment encourages more personalized service, contributing significantly to guests’ overall experience. Comments frequently highlight the exceptional service provided, representing the heart of what guests appreciate during their stay.
The family-run Gray Collection thrives on its close-knit operation. Dimitri’s sisters assist with various aspects of the business, ensuring every guest feels special. Their father, Costa, maintains a presence in the hotels and restaurants, contributing to a warm, familial ambiance.
A few developments are underway near the hotel, including a new courthouse, which may introduce some construction noise. Fortunately, the work often halts by the evening, allowing guests to enjoy tranquil nights.
Le Petit Hotel guests have access to the gym and spa amenities at the nearby William Gray Hotel. While there’s no onsite restaurant, the surrounding area offers a plethora of dining choices. Guests can enjoy delectable dishes at the Gray Collection’s Gaspar restaurant and the stunning rooftop Terrasse restaurant at the William Gray Hotel, both located just a short stroll away.
Coffee lovers will appreciate the complimentary coffee in the lobby. For guests desiring a brewed beverage in their room, Nespresso machines can be requested from the front desk.
