Alaska Airlines Takes Advantage of Avelo Airlines’ Departure from Burbank Airport
In a strategic move to fill the gap left by Avelo Airlines, Alaska Airlines announced on Thursday that it will introduce year-round, daily flights from Hollywood Burbank Airport to three destinations: Eugene, Oregon; Redmond/Bend, Oregon; and Pasco, Washington. Starting from October 26, these routes will be serviced using regional Embraer E175 aircraft.
Avelo Airlines has declared that it will cease operations at Burbank on December 2, a decision that paved the way for Alaska Airlines to expand its services in the area. Discount carrier Breeze Airways is also entering the fray, planning to launch its own routes to Eugene, Pasco, Bend, as well as Eureka, California, and Provo, Utah. As the competition heats up, Breeze’s flights will commence in March, allowing Alaska Airlines to establish a foothold in the market first.
Alaska vs. Breeze: A Competitive Landscape
Alaska Airlines already commands a presence at Burbank, currently operating flights to five other destinations, giving it a competitive edge over Breeze, which is new to the airport. This early entry allows Alaska to establish brand loyalty and market share before Breeze’s operations begin.
The introduction of these new routes is part of a broader expansion, with Alaska Airlines unveiling a total of seven new routes connecting California to the Pacific Northwest. Other notable additions include:
- Ontario, California to Boise, Idaho, with daily service starting January 7
- Orange County to Spokane, Washington, also commencing daily service on January 7
- Seasonal winter service between Santa Rosa, California, and Palm Springs, scheduled five times weekly beginning October 26
- Thrice-weekly flights from San Diego to Sun Valley, Idaho with seasonal winter service starting December 18
According to Cirium flight schedule data, Alaska Airlines will be the sole provider for connections between Ontario and Boise, ensuring its dominance in that corridor. The airline will also be the only operator linking San Diego with Sun Valley and will replace the Avelo service that previously connected Santa Rosa to Palm Springs.
For travelers heading from Orange County to Spokane, meanwhile, Allegiant Air currently offers summer seasonal service, highlighting the competitive dynamics in California’s aviation market.
As Alaska Airlines expands its service offerings and Breeze prepares to enter the Burbank market, travelers can expect a range of new options to explore the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
