Alaska Airlines is set to expand its operations in San Diego next spring, adding five new destinations to its flight schedule. The Seattle-based airline will introduce routes connecting San Diego to Dallas-Fort Worth, Raleigh-Durham, Oakland, and Santa Barbara, California, starting April 22. Additionally, flights between San Diego and Tulsa, Oklahoma, will launch on March 18, marking Alaska Airlines’ inaugural service to Tulsa.
The new Oakland service will operate four times daily, with twice-daily flights to Dallas and Santa Barbara, while Raleigh and Tulsa will offer daily flights. This expansion positions Alaska Airlines to compete against American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, both of which provide multiple daily flights on select routes such as San Diego-Dallas-Fort Worth and San Diego-Oakland, according to Cirium flight schedule data. Notably, Alaska will be the only airline servicing the remaining three routes.
This strategic ramp-up brings the number of nonstop destinations from San Diego to 49, up from 41 just this past August. Alaska Airlines anticipates boosting its San Diego operations by over 35% year-on-year next spring, solidifying its position as the runner-up behind market leader Southwest Airlines. The airline’s growth is being supported by the recent opening of New Terminal 1, which boasts 19 gates.
New Routes from Portland, Oregon
In addition to its San Diego expansion, Alaska Airlines has revealed plans for eight new routes next spring, including four new routes from Portland, Oregon and a daily service to Hawaii. Beginning May 13, the airline will operate daily flights from Portland to Baltimore, Philadelphia, and St. Louis, along with daily summer seasonal flights to Idaho Falls, Idaho.
The new Hawaii route will also commence on May 13, operating daily flights to Burbank, California, throughout the summer season. From its Seattle hub, Alaska will add new destinations including Tulsa and Eureka, California. The Seattle-Tulsa route is set to start concurrently with San Diego-Tulsa on March 18, while daily flights to Eureka will commence on April 8.
Alaska Airlines will also introduce year-round service between Ontario, California, and Santa Rosa, California, starting on March 18.
To accommodate these 13 new routes, Alaska will make adjustments to its flight schedules, including reducing or eliminating service on certain routes from Los Angeles and San Francisco, though specific details on these changes have not yet been disclosed.
For travelers looking forward to exploring new destinations or connecting through these enhanced services, Alaska Airlines’ latest expansion signals exciting opportunities and increased options in the skies.
