Alaska Airlines Expands International Reach with New Flights to London Heathrow and Iceland
Alaska Airlines is set to enhance its international offerings with the launch of flights to London Heathrow and Iceland in spring 2024. This expansion connects these popular destinations through Alaska’s new long-haul hub in Seattle, demonstrating the airline’s commitment to becoming a major player in international air travel.
New Boeing 787 Dreamliner on London-Seattle Route
The Seattle-London route will feature the airline’s state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner in a two-cabin configuration. This aircraft will sport a stunning new exterior design inspired by the aurora borealis, which aims to enhance the passenger experience. The rollout of this fresh livery begins in January, with all 787s anticipated to be updated by spring 2024.
Details on the Fleet
Alaska Airlines recently expanded its fleet with the addition of widebody 787s and Airbus A330s from its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines in September 2024. The Boeing 787-9 will feature 34 enclosed suites with lie-flat seats in business class, ensuring a luxurious travel experience for passengers.
Seasonal and Year-Round Routes
Although specific launch dates have yet to be released, the Seattle-to-London route will operate daily and year-round. On the other hand, flights from Seattle to Reykjavik will be a seasonal offering, also running daily. For the Iceland route, Alaska will utilize the fuel-efficient Boeing 737 Max aircraft.
Growing International Hub
The upcoming routes to Europe represent the second and third international services announced by Alaska Airlines, as the airline solidifies its position as an international hub. In addition to the London and Reykjavik routes, Alaska Airlines plans to launch seasonal flights to Rome next spring.
Recent Long-Haul Services
Alaska Airlines began its first long-haul service on May 12, connecting Seattle with Tokyo Narita. Additionally, Seattle-Seoul service is scheduled to commence on September 12, further demonstrating the airline’s commitment to expanding its international footprint.
Competitive Landscape
As Alaska Airlines launches these new routes, it will compete with industry heavyweights such as Delta, Virgin Atlantic, and British Airways on the Seattle-Heathrow route. Similarly, on the Seattle-Reykjavik route, Alaska will go head-to-head with Icelandair. These new offerings reflect a significant strategic move as Alaska Airlines aims to carve out a niche in the competitive international travel market.
