Air Canada is gearing up for an exciting expansion in its international services starting summer 2026, focusing on new routes in Europe and Asia. This strategic move comes alongside the introduction of the innovative XLR aircraft, which is set to compete significantly in the lucrative business class market.
XLR Aircraft: Redefining Business Class Travel
The XLR, featuring fully lie-flat seats in Business Class, is designed for longer international hauls rather than domestic U.S. routes. As Air Canada’s Chief Customer Officer, Lucie Guillemette, explained, “The XLR is not a U.S. growth airplane; it’s designed for Europe and Africa.” With a remarkable increase in range—allowing flights to last an additional three hours over standard narrow-body aircraft—the XLR aims to enhance the airline’s international offerings.
Trends in North American Routes
Despite its evolving fleet, Air Canada is experiencing a slight decline in bookings from Canadians traveling to the U.S., currently down by approximately 10-15%. This trend has been consistent with the airline’s Q1 2025 statistics. Guillemette added, “We don’t anticipate these numbers changing significantly soon,” noting that there hasn’t been any notable increase in U.S. travelers booking Air Canada flights into Canada either.
Recovery Post-Labour Disruption
Following a three-day labour disruption in August, Air Canada has reported a return to normal booking levels. Guillemette expressed gratitude towards travel advisors and the trade for their commitment during this period, acknowledging the essential role they played in supporting customers through the disruption.
New International Routes in 2026
Air Canada’s international network is set to include a host of new destinations. Starting next year, the airline will introduce flights from Montreal to Catania, Sicily, and Palma de Mallorca. From Toronto, Air Canada will reinstate nonstop services to major destinations like Shanghai and Budapest while increasing its flight frequency to Prague. This development significantly bolsters Toronto Pearson International Airport as Air Canada’s largest hub, connecting travelers to over 150 worldwide locations.
Year-Round Service Enhancements
Additionally, Air Canada is transitioning its Vancouver-Bangkok route to year-round service, marking it as the only North American airline with direct, nonstop flights to Bangkok (BKK). The airline is also set to restart its Toronto-Tel Aviv route next month, further expanding its reach and providing more options for international travelers.
For those planning international travel, Air Canada’s expanded routes and innovative aircraft like the XLR promise an enhanced and comfortable journey. With comprehensive service options on the horizon, travelers can look forward to a unique experience when flying with Air Canada.
