During a recent virtual town hall, Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of Sandals Resorts International, addressed travel advisors regarding the impact of Hurricane Melissa on the company’s Jamaica portfolio, including important post-hurricane damage assessments.
Resort Impact and Structural Integrity
Stewart informed approximately 5,000 travel advisors that the Sandals South Coast endured a substantial hit from Hurricane Melissa but remarkably avoided any structural damage. “I’m happy to report that Sandals South Coast, miraculously, has no structural damage,” said Stewart. Although some design elements were impacted, the buildings, including the overwater bungalows, remain structurally sound despite needing interior repairs.
Upcoming Enhancements and Upgrades
During its closure, Sandals South Coast will not only undergo necessary repairs but will also receive several enhancements. “The hotel will be upgraded,” Stewart announced. “We’ll take it to a 2.0 level. Stay tuned for more there.”
Similarly, both Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Royal Caribbean, also scheduled to remain closed until May 30, will receive upgrades to improve their offerings. Stewart emphasized that these enhancements allow the resorts to implement changes that had been planned but previously delayed.
Commitment to Staff and Community Support
Throughout these challenging times, Sandals Resorts has maintained salaries and benefits for its Jamaican staff members. “We’ve kept 100% of our team members on payroll,” Stewart reassured the advisors. He also highlighted continued pension and medical benefits for staff, reinforcing the company’s commitment to its employees.
Moreover, Sandals Foundation is actively supporting recovery efforts, having already deployed over a million dollars in aid. The organization’s initiatives underscore the significant role tourism plays in Jamaica’s economy.
Importance of Tourism and Travel Advisors
Stewart stressed the pivotal importance of tourism for Jamaica, calling it the island’s “most economically impactful industry in our society.” He urged travel advisors to keep promoting Jamaica despite the recent disruptions. “Every single time, and especially in these very difficult times, we will always, always rely on our travel advisor partners,” he stated, reinforcing the crucial role travel advisors play within the industry.
Future Openings and Property Availability
While Sandals Montego Bay, Sandals Royal Caribbean, and Sandals South Coast are set to remain closed until spring next year, Sandals plans to reopen five other properties in Jamaica—including Sandals Dunn’s River, Sandals Ochi, Sandals Royal Plantation, Sandals Negril, and Beaches Negril—on December 6.
