As Grenada approaches its highly anticipated annual celebration, Spicemas, the tourism sector is enjoying significant developments, including a new weekly flight service from Air Canada that commenced on June 2nd. This service connects Toronto (YYZ) with St. George’s (GND) twice a week through August 31st, further enhancing access to the stunning Spice Isle.
In conjunction with this growth, Grenada has appointed Stacey Liburd as the new CEO of the Grenada Tourism Authority, following the transition of Petra Roach to the private sector. Liburd takes the helm at a time when the island is witnessing ongoing success, evidenced by 26 consecutive months of increasing tourism activity set to last until December 2024. This success is largely attributed to enhanced airlift options and strategic marketing initiatives that have propelled Grenada’s appeal as a travel destination.

The previous year also saw a 17% increase in visitor numbers, along with elevated spending and longer stays, showcasing Grenada’s burgeoning popularity. Adrian Thomas, Grenada’s Minister for Tourism, the Creative Economy, and Culture, expressed enthusiasm over Liburd’s appointment, stating that her extensive experience in the tourism sector will be crucial for steering the industry toward sustainable growth.
Among the attractions drawing interest to Grenada are its breathtaking natural landscapes, countless beaches, and hiking trails. Notable spots include the Seven Sisters Waterfall and the newly refurbished Annandale Waterfall, complete with a larger viewing platform and restaurant. Additionally, the island boasts the world’s first underwater sculpture park at Molinere, now featuring 31 new pieces inspired by the Spicemas carnival.

Despite setbacks from Hurricane Beryl last year, the sister island Carriacou has launched a new underwater sculpture park dubbed “A World Adrift,” featuring 30 distinctive boat sculptures that highlight climate change, designed by the artist Jason deCaires Taylor.
Further enhancing the visitor experience, the House of Chocolate in downtown St. George’s offers tours showcasing the chocolate-making process from cacao bean to bar, alongside a selection of locally produced chocolates, crafts, and fashion from Grenadian entrepreneurs. The vibrant St. George’s Market is also a hub for street food and fresh local produce.
Another point of interest is Fort St. George, the oldest standing fort in the country, which is undergoing restoration. The Fort George Revival Project aims to reopen the historic site this Fall, introducing a museum, restaurants, and bars for visitors to enjoy.
