Intrepid Travel Expands with Boutique Acquisitions in Tasmania and Marrakech
Intrepid Travel has officially expanded its portfolio by acquiring distinctive boutique properties in Tasmania and Marrakech, emphasizing its commitment to sustainable travel and community engagement.
Edge of the Bay Resort in Tasmania
Located near Coals Bay, Edge of the Bay is a stunning 20-room coastal resort perched on 18 picturesque acres, with breathtaking views of Wineglass Bay. Just a stone’s throw from Freycinet National Park, the resort features oceanview studios and private chalets that offer guests a tranquil retreat. As part of its acquisition, Intrepid plans to refresh the resort’s facilities to align with its impact-led ethos.
Revitalization and Environmental Initiatives
The revitalization process will introduce nature-based activities and educational programs on environmental stewardship, developed in partnership with Greening Australia. This organization is dedicated to conserving Australia’s native vegetation. Additionally, Intrepid intends to collaborate with the Palawa people, the Indigenous custodians of the land, to conduct a comprehensive cultural heritage assessment at the property.
Marrakech Riad Acquisition
In another significant acquisition, Intrepid has purchased a traditional 17-room riad in Marrakech, just minutes away from the bustling Medina, the city’s historic old town. This Moroccan guesthouse, which recently opened, offers immersive culinary experiences in collaboration with The Amal Association, a nonprofit organization committed to training women in hospitality and providing them with valuable skills.
Future Operations in Marrakech
Intrepid will take full operational control of the riad starting in July, and it aims to create a vibrant and culturally rich experience for guests.
Commitment to Cultural Preservation
James Thornton, CEO of Intrepid Travel, stated, “Our approach to accommodation is rooted in a dedication to preserving culture, cultivating connections, and enhancing the economic benefits that travel can bring to local communities.” This philosophy underscores the importance of responsible tourism in fostering sustainable development.
Plans for Future Expansion
Last year, Intrepid expressed its ambition to accelerate its growth in the hotel sector, targeting 20 property acquisitions by 2027. The company is actively scouting locations in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, continuing its legacy of promoting sustainable travel experiences alongside its previous acquisition of the Daintree Ecolodge in Queensland, Australia, and its multi-year lease of a hotel in Vietnam.
Innovative Eco-Friendly Practices
Following its acquisition of Daintree Ecolodge, Intrepid has implemented a series of eco-friendly initiatives, such as solar energy integration, advanced wastewater treatment systems, composting initiatives, and organic vegetable gardens. Additionally, the lodge is certified as a B Corporation, affirming its commitment to high standards of social and environmental responsibility.
As Intrepid Travel continues to expand its global footprint, it remains dedicated to creating sustainable travel options that respect cultural heritage and benefit local communities.
