Elliott Ferguson, CEO of Destination DC, has revealed that anticipated visitation rates for WorldPride 2025 in Washington, D.C., are lagging behind previous projections. This year’s three-week celebration is expected to spotlight the vibrancy of the LGBTQ community, with Ferguson noting that the city initially estimated around 3 million people would attend, comprising 2 million overnight visitors and 1 million from the regional area. The projected economic impact of the event was set at a staggering $787 million.
Concerns About Visitation Numbers
The flagship event of WorldPride 2025 is a highly anticipated concert featuring the international superstar Shakira, scheduled for May 31 at Nationals Park. However, Ferguson addressed growing concerns regarding the lower than expected attendance figures. He pointed out that some of this uncertainty arises from the presence of the federal government in the area, as well as anxieties surrounding international travelers’ ability to enter and exit the United States freely.
Understanding D.C.’s Unique Landscape
“It is essential for visitors to distinguish between the federal Washington, D.C., and D.C. as a city,” Ferguson stated. “With over 14% of the population identifying as LGBTQ, the local community is both welcoming and eager to separate itself from any federal rhetoric.” Ferguson emphasizes the importance of creating an understanding among potential visitors about the city’s vibrant character, distinct from federal policies and statements.
The Call for Advocacy
With rhetoric becoming increasingly charged, Ferguson has urged people to attend WorldPride D.C., even if they have reservations about the surrounding discourse. “Now more than ever, we need advocacy,” he remarked, highlighting the role of Washington, D.C., as a focal point for LGBTQ issues at the federal level. “The global community should unite in support of the LGBTQ+ community in the U.S.”
Anticipated Events and Activities
The festivities for WorldPride will kick off on May 17 and last until June 8, featuring a variety of exciting events including a parade, an international march and rally. Attendees can also enjoy a two-day street festival, free concerts headlined by renowned artists such as Cynthia Erivo and Doechii, culminating in a celebration of love, acceptance, and advocacy for LGBTQ rights.
As WorldPride D.C. draws closer, the city encourages both local and international visitors to join in and support the cause, fostering a spirit of unity and celebration within the LGBTQ community and beyond.
