As I entered Interstellar Arc, a cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) attraction located at Area15 in Las Vegas, a blue fox named the Diplomat warmly welcomed me. With its empathetic eyes and soothing demeanor, this clever guide set the tone for an incredible journey that transports visitors from a bustling 25th-century spaceport to the marvels of the 27th century aboard a monumental interstellar ship.
Wearing the VR headset, the Diplomat led me through this immersive experience, prompting me to explore captivating sights. Among them were Arcadia, a potential new home for humanity located more than 11 light years away, and the expansive Cosmopolis, an orbital city of stunning architecture. The visuals of our spaceship and the breathtaking landscapes of Arcadia were strikingly detailed, enhanced by a soothing soundtrack and inspirational messages, creating an atmosphere of wonder.
Felix Lajeunesse, co-founder of Felix & Paul Studios, expressed that the vision for Interstellar Arc aligns perfectly with the innovative spirit of Las Vegas. “What [Area15] aims to achieve as an entertainment district complements our goals for this large-scale, location-based VR experience,” he explained. The studio, with over a decade of experience in VR, has shifted from short, home-based cinematic experiences to a social environment that accommodates up to 180 guests in an engaging 60-minute journey.
Interactive Journey through Space
Guests have the opportunity to activate a virtual camera and capture up to 30 photos and selfies, which are shared via email post-experience. Communication is facilitated through a virtual microphone on the left wrist, allowing interaction with fellow participants in their headsets. In a playful twist, visitors can earn achievement points to demonstrate their preparedness for life on an exoplanet.
The experience is designed to be comfortable, with daunting visuals translating into easy strides, even for those with acrophobia. This element of user-friendliness enhances the overall enjoyment, allowing visitors to collect points and feedback for future visits at their leisure.
“We have evolved the narrative techniques used in virtual reality to create emotional experiences,” noted Lajeunesse, highlighting the advancements in hardware and software that have emerged over the last 13 years. Felix & Paul Studios is renowned for previous works like the VR documentary series “Space Explorers: The ISS Experience,” filmed aboard the International Space Station, and “Space Explorers: The Infinite,” which has traveled to cities worldwide, adding a layer of educational value to the entertainment.
