The Xala Foundation has launched an innovative environmental initiative named Sierra a Mar (Ridge to Reef), aimed at promoting regenerative coastal development along Mexico’s stunning Pacific coastline. This program forms part of the broader Xala, a $1 billion low-density residential and tourism development currently underway in Costalegre, Jalisco.
Restoring Coastal Ecosystems: The Vision of Sierra a Mar
The Sierra a Mar initiative is committed to restoring and preserving 62 miles of coastline, covering a diverse range of ecosystems from mountain watersheds to vibrant coral reefs. The program is spearheaded by Xala project coordinator Stefanie Brendl, with support from notable stakeholders and Costalegre resident Richard Gere. Impressively, less than 20% of Xala’s expansive 3,000-acre property is slated for development, ensuring that over 1,200 acres will be designated as a private protected area.
Environmental Restoration and Protection Efforts
Currently, nearly 590 acres within this project are focused on habitat restoration, including the establishment of a five-mile sanctuary for turtle nesting. The comprehensive approach of Sierra a Mar encompasses a variety of environmental initiatives:
- Reforestation: Planting endemic species to enhance local biodiversity.
- Estuary Rehabilitation: Restoring Ramsar- and UNESCO-recognized estuaries to their natural functions.
- Wildlife Corridor Protection: Creating pathways to protect local wildlife.
- Water Quality Improvements: Initiating measures to ensure clean water access.
- Waste Reduction Programs: Implementing best practices for minimizing waste.
- Artificial Reefs: Developing structures to prevent coastal erosion and boost marine biodiversity.
Community Development Initiatives
In addition to environmental efforts, Sierra a Mar is dedicated to enhancing the local community through various initiatives. These include:
- Clean Water Access: Programs aimed at providing reliable water supply to residents.
- Agricultural Support: Resources and training for local farmers to promote sustainable practices.
- Youth Education Programs: Initiatives designed to empower the next generation with knowledge about conservation and sustainability.
Future Developments at Xala
Looking ahead, Xala plans to feature 75 private residences along with a luxurious 51-key Six Senses hotel, expected to welcome guests by 2028. Furthermore, the new Costalegre Airport, located just ten minutes from the property, is scheduled to open in the third quarter of 2025, enhancing accessibility to this pristine area.
With its focus on environmental restoration and community development, the Sierra a Mar initiative sets a benchmark for sustainable projects along Mexico’s Pacific coastline, positioning itself as a model for integrating eco-friendly practices within tourism and residential development.
